Julie Meyer is our newest Volunteer of the Month. She is one of our new volunteers in the hub. Our Senior Hub Coordinator Nicole told us, “From day one Julie’s passion for helping people has shined bright! She’s always eager to help and willing to learn. She’s not afraid to try something new and she always carries a positive attitude and outlook on life. These are just a few of the qualities that make Julie so amazing and enjoyable to work alongside! It’s such an honor to have Julie with us and we are so thankful and appreciative of everything you do to help us. Thank you for being you, Julie!”

How did you become involved with Second Helpings?

I heard about Second Helpings from my son-in-law, John Harmon. He has volunteered at Second Helpings with a team from MISO. He told me about the organization and thought that it would be a good fit for me.

What things have you done since you began volunteering with us?

I work in the Hub at Second Helpings. I love the Hub because it is fast paced and something is always going on. I have sorted food that was donated and also have packed food for redirect to clients. I have learned (still learning!) to use a pallet jack and how to shrink wrap pallets once they are full and move them around the Hub. I have swept floors and mopped floors and just about anything else that needs to be done.

What have you liked best about volunteering with us?

I LOVE volunteering at the Hub at Second Helpings because everyone on the Hub team was so welcoming to me. They are amazing in the work they do and the happy manner in which they do their work. They always pitch in to help each other and I love the atmosphere. They put a smile on my face every time that I come to volunteer.

What are you most proud of accomplishing through your volunteer work here?

I am most proud of becoming a part of Second Helpings because I believe in their mission to assist those in underserved communities. It was very clear to me from the day of my orientation with Michelle, it would be a great place to volunteer because of her kindness and philosophy that she shared that day.

What do you do when you’re not volunteering with us?

When I am not volunteering, I spend time with my children and grandchildren and attend as many of their activities that I can. I also enjoy spending time with my brothers and sister and my dear friends. I like to travel and also love walking my sweet dog, Darla.

Do you volunteer for any other organization?

In addition to volunteering at Second Helpings, I also volunteer at the Fishers Youth Assistance Program where we pack backpack snacks for school children that are given out weekly and I also participate in the packing and distribution of their Summer Meals Program. I volunteer at the Good Samaritan Network in Hamilton County where we sort and distribute clothing, food, and household items to clients in need. Lastly, I volunteer for HamCo Love by delivering free hygiene products to schools, pantries, and shelters in Hamilton County.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

People may be surprised to know that I have six grandsons that range in age from two to 16. They are the light of my life.
