January 2018 Volunteers of the Month: Logan Metzger & Jess Howard

These two go together like peanut butter and jelly, like bread and butter, like salt and pepper, like… well, I could go on! Logan and Jess can be found helping out in the Hunger Relief kitchen every Thursday evening, prepping food, making dinner for the other volunteers or leading groups. Jess especially loves breaking down the dish room at the end of the night. They both help at all of Second Helpings’ special events, and have been integral parts of forming our First Course young professionals group. Together, they have over 840 hours of volunteer service, but I won’t say who has more.

They both found their way to Second Helpings through a simple google search and they met at their New Volunteer Orientation in March of 2013. They have been friends ever since.

When asked what they enjoy most about Second Helpings, they both agree that the volunteer community is the biggest draw. Jess says, “I love the Second Helpings staff and volunteer community. I love seeing the raw ingredients come into the kitchen one night, and the other night wrapping pans and seeing the tasty meals we are providing the community.” Oh, and Logan adds, “The food isn’t bad either.”

They both point towards their role in engaging more young professionals in Second Helpings’ mission through First Course as both of their proudest accomplishments to date.

When Jess isn’t at Second Helpings, she’s volunteering at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship, baking, dog-sitting, or planning her upcoming wedding with her fiance, mark Olson (who also volunteers at events). She even skydives on occasion! Logan can be found biking, cooking, spending time with friends and family, or volunteering with the American Red Cross’ Disaster Action Team.

We are thankful for everything you do for Second Helpings with your generous use of your time and the fun that you bring to everything you do. The spirit of volunteerism that you inspire by engaging more folks in the mission to transform lives through the power of food is invaluable. We love you dearly, and cannot begin to express our gratitude for everything you do to feed this community.
