Volunteers launch campaign to sponsor Class 100

Have we mentioned we have the best volunteers in the world? Of course we have, but let’s say it again to underscore this verifiable fact.

Recently, our volunteers launched a campaign in support of the upcoming 100th free culinary job training class at Second Helpings. To celebrate this milestone, the volunteers have committed to sponsoring the class. They are off to an incredible start. However, being the best volunteers in the world, they refuse to accept anything less than 100% participation from our amazing volunteers.

Are you a Second Helpings volunteer who is interested in joining the effort to empower the 100th class of culinary trainees with the tools and training they need to transform their lives? If so, the process is simple: make a donation via the website (no gift is too small), and designate “class 100” in the “In Honor of” field on the donation form. That’s it!

To recognize your commitment to class 100, Second Helpings is offering a t-shirt to any volunteer who donates. To collect your t-shirt, simply contact Amber Jett at amber@secondhelpings.org or stop by her office next time you’re in the building to volunteer.

How much should I give?

As we mentioned above, no gift is too small. Many of the volunteers have chosen to make a $100 gift to commemorate the 100th class. However, $125 covers one student’s culinary training for the day. $500 provides a student with uniforms, transportation and materials for this course.  $1,250 will bring critical life skills and career skills training to an entire class for one day. $6,720 fully funds one student’s culinary job training.

We cannot overstate the incredible commitment our volunteers make to this organization each day. They truly make the mission to transform lives through the power of food possible. Without that commitment, the challenge of preparing and sending 4,000 meals into the Indianapolis community each day would prove impossible. To date, our volunteers have prepared and delivered more than 10 million meals. They have rescued more than 28 million pounds of food, otherwise destined for the landfill. Accomplishing all of this has required over 500,000 collective volunteer hours since Second Helpings was founded in 1998. We will never be able to say it enough, but we will say it again anyway: THANK YOU!

Today, over 700 Second Helpings graduates are preparing dinner for your family on your night out. They’re feeding the athletes that make Indy the greatest sports town in the world. They’re working in the kitchens that have revolutionized this city’s reputation into a nationally recognized culinary destination. Indy restaurants rely on our graduates, because they know our students will exceed their demands. They know that our graduates have solid skills and are hungry to learn more. They know that our graduates appreciate the opportunity that a job represents.
