Volunteer Spotlight: Girishma Grover
Bringing Chemistry, Kindness, and a Dash of Joy to Every Shift
If you’ve volunteered at Second Helpings recently, there’s a good chance you’ve met Girishma Grover, or at least felt her presence through a smile, a kind word, or a well-organized stack of wrapped pans.
Girishma first connected with Second Helpings while looking for a meaningful way to serve her community. “The mission to fight hunger and food waste spoke directly to my heart,” she says. “Right away, it felt like I’d found a place where my time and energy truly mattered.”
Since then, Girishma has become a familiar and deeply appreciated face in the kitchen. From prepping produce and labeling trays to guiding new volunteers and helping behind the scenes, she approaches every task with purpose and positivity. “Every shift is different, but they all share one thing—the joy of teamwork.”
It’s that shared sense of purpose that keeps Girishma coming back. “Even wiping down counters feels meaningful when you know what it leads to. It’s fulfilling to know our efforts feed so many people across the city.”
Outside the kitchen, Girishma is a chemist who’s passionate about using science to serve the greater good. She mentors students through STEM outreach, volunteers with the “Make Indy Beautiful Again” initiative, and, when she’s not giving back, spends time cooking creative vegetarian meals, journaling in the park, and hanging out with her dog Toasty.
She also loves to travel, especially to small towns where she can explore local food, culture, and community. “Travel reminds me that kindness and connection are universal—just like at Second Helpings.”
Thank you, Girishma, for showing up with heart, humor, and humility. You remind us that even the smallest actions, when done with love, can ripple out in powerful ways.
