There are many different ways to join the fight against hunger with Second Helpings. Here are some of the essential jobs volunteers perform each day.

Roles:

  • Produce Chopper
  • Meat Chopper
  • Sandwich Maker
  • Pan Prepper
  • Pan Wrapper
  • Oven Operator
  • Tilt Operator

Duties:

  • Prepare food based on instructions of kitchen staff
  • Help with kitchen cleaning, sanitation, and maintaining food safety
  • May occasionally supervise job trainees or other volunteers in food preparation

Qualifications:

  • Know how to use basic kitchen equipment
  • Stand for four hours

Available shifts:

  • Monday – Friday: 8:30am-12:00pm, 1pm-4pm
  • Tuesday: 4pm-8pm
  • Saturday: 8am-12pm

Minimum Age: 16

Duties:

  • Package bread so it is ready to be delivered to partner agencies the next day
  • Distinguish bread/desserts are suitable for kids or adults.
  • Record how many bags of packaged bread are going to each agency

Qualifications:

  • Ability to stand for four hours
  • Strong organizational skills

Shifts:

  • Monday-Thursday: 12:45pm-3pm

Minimum Age: 16

Duties:

  • Aid the kitchen by cleaning and storing dishes.
  • Help with kitchen cleaning, sanitation, and maintaining food safety
  • When dish room is slow, help in other areas designated by supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Ability to stand for four hours
  • Ability to work in a room with high temperatures due to steam

Available Shifts:

  • Monday – Friday: 8:30am-12pm, 12:45pm-4pm
  • Tuesday: 4:30pm-8pm
  • Saturday: 8am-12pm

Minimum Age: 16

Duties:

  • Load outgoing meals for Hunger Relief and deliver them to partner agencies in a Second Helpings vehicle.
  • Monitor proper safe food handling practices at Second Helpings and partner agencies.
  • Maintain cleanliness of equipment used during volunteer shift.

Qualifications:

  • Must first volunteer a few times as a Driver Companion in order to understand routes and procedures
  • Must be at least 18 years-old and have a valid driver’s license
  • Must have an acceptable BMV record
  • Knowledge of community streets and ability to read maps a plus
  • Ability to communicate effectively with donors and partner agencies
  • Ability to maintain positive community relationships
  • Heavy lifting required (up to 25-30 lbs.)
  • In the interests of public safety, all staff and volunteer drivers must comply with Second Helpings’ drug testing policy

Available Shifts:

  • Monday-Friday: 9:15am-12pm or 12:45-3pm

Duties:

  • Load outgoing meals for Hunger Relief and deliver them to partner agencies.
  • Monitor proper safe food handling practices at Second Helpings and partner agencies.
  • Maintain cleanliness of equipment used during volunteer shift

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of community streets and ability to read maps a plus
  • Ability to communicate effectively with donors and recipients
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships
  • Must be at least 16 years-old
  • Heavy lifting required (up to 25-30 lbs.)

Available Shifts:

  • Monday-Friday: 9:15am-12pm or 12:45pm-3pm

Minimum age: 16

Duties:

  • Accompany Second Helpings driver in a box truck on food rescue route, to and from donation locations
  • Assist with food rescue pick-ups
  • Assist with unloading trucks and sorting donations

Qualifications:

  • Heavy lifting required (up to 30-50 lbs.)

Available Shifts:

  • Monday-Friday: 8am-12pm

Minimum Age: 16

Duties:

  • Greet visitors and direct them to their hosts
  • Answer incoming phone calls, handle general information questions, and direct caller to a staff member as appropriate
  • Admit visitors and volunteers through secured doors (buzz them in)
  • Enter electronic data as needed by Second Helpings staff
  • Assist with general office tasks as needed

Qualifications:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with donors, visitors, staff and volunteers
  • Basic computer skills including Excel, Word, and the Internet
  • Knowledge of the Second Helpings organization and practices
  • Ability to maintain positive community relationships

Available Shifts:

  • Monday-Friday: 8am-12:15pm, 12:15pm-4:30pm
  • Tuesday from 4pm-8pm
  • Saturday: 8am-12pm

Minimum age: 16

Duties:

  • Assist Hub Coordinator with cleaning, organizing, and processing donations.
  • Available as a back-up for Food Rescue or Driver Companion
  • Flexibility in assignment, self-direction

Qualifications:

  • Some heavy lifting required (30-50 lbs.)
  • Ability to stand for 1-2 hours at a time

Available shifts:

  • Monday-Friday: 8am-12pm or 12:45-3pm
