This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Michael Santino, a dedicated volunteer whose curiosity and commitment have made a big impact at Second Helpings. Since discovering us through an online search, Michael has explored nearly every volunteer opportunity we offer—embracing each task with enthusiasm and a genuine appreciation for the mission. His passion for pairing purpose with action is clear, and we’re so grateful to have him as part of the Second Helpings family. Get to know more about Michael below!
How did you become involved with Second Helpings?
I stumbled on it when looking online for a place to volunteer in Indy and the mission resonated with me.
What things have you done since you began volunteering with us?
I think I’ve tried most of the volunteer opportunities since starting, it’s fascinating to see how the whole operation works.
What have you liked best about volunteering at Second Helpings?
I’ve really enjoyed the people. From the staff to the other volunteers, it’s an uplifting environment to spend some free time.
What are you most proud of accomplishing through your volunteer work here?
I really appreciate that the organization has taken two of the major problems our society faces, food waste and food insecurity, and paired them to create a mutual solution. I’m glad to be a part of that.
What do you do when you’re not volunteering with us?
I spend a lot of time outdoors, gardening, reading, and playing around with art.
Do you volunteer for any other organization?
I occasionally volunteer for the High Fives organization but Second Helpings is my main gig.
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I blow glass in my free time.
