At Second Helpings, we’re proud to witness incredible stories of transformation every day—but this past Sunday, one of those stories took center stage at one of the most legendary sporting venues in the world.
On July 27, in front of thousands gathered at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Brickyard 400, Scott Priest, a U.S. Navy veteran and graduate of our Culinary Job Training (CJT) program, was gifted a fully refurbished 2022 Chevy Blazer through the National Auto Body Council’s® Recycled Rides® program.
A Journey of Service, Resilience, and Hope
Scott served his country from 1990 to 1993, earning multiple military honors for his deployment in the Persian Gulf. After facing difficult chapters in life, Scott found his way to Second Helpings and enrolled in our free seven-week Culinary Job Training program. Designed for unemployed and underemployed adults, the program not only teaches culinary techniques but also empowers students with life skills and confidence to build a new future.
Today, Scott works as the Food Services Coordinator at Avenue’s Recovery Center, where he supports others in recovery through his culinary talents and leadership. He’s a shining example of what’s possible when opportunity meets determination.
But even with a steady job and a heart full of purpose, Scott faced a practical challenge—he had no personal vehicle. Relying solely on the bus system to get to work, shop for groceries, and carry dog food for his companion, Katya, added hours to his day and limited his ability to grow professionally.
A Vehicle with Real Impact
That changed on Sunday, thanks to a powerful collaboration between NABC®, Allstate, and Gerber Collision & Glass, who came together to restore and present a car to someone truly deserving. Second Helpings was honored to nominate Scott for this gift.
In front of a cheering crowd at Pagoda Plaza, Scott received the keys to his new vehicle. With this reliable transportation, he can now:
-
Commute safely and efficiently to work
-
Reclaim time for rest, reflection, and connection
-
Explore new career opportunities with greater freedom
-
Visit family and care for his loyal dog, Katya, with less strain
“This is more than just a car,” Scott said. “It’s a new start. It gives me freedom.”
Driving Toward a Brighter Future
Since its founding in 2007, the NABC Recycled Rides® program has donated over 3,500 vehicles to individuals and families in need. This moment was not just about a car—it was about community, dignity, and what’s possible when we all work together.
Scott’s story is a testament to the ripple effect that donor support and community partnerships can create. From a rescued ingredient to a hot meal, from a kitchen classroom to a career, and now from the bus stop to the driver’s seat—your support helps fuel every mile of that journey.
We couldn’t be prouder of Scott and are deeply grateful to our partners at NABC, Allstate, and Gerber Collision & Glass for making this incredible gift possible.
