Our Culinary Job Training program helps adults gain the skills, confidence, and experience needed to build successful careers in the food service industry. By providing free culinary education and hands-on training, we help people move toward financial stability while strengthening the workforce across Central Indiana. This program is a key part of our mission to fight hunger and poverty from all angles.
So, what Is a Culinary Job Training Program?
Culinary job training programs are workforce development programs that prepare people for careers in the food service industry. These programs focus on practical kitchen skills, workplace readiness, and industry connections that help students move into stable employment.
At Second Helpings, our program combines culinary education with life skills and career support, so students graduate ready to succeed in professional kitchens.
Participants train in a dedicated production training kitchen, where they practice culinary techniques and kitchen fundamentals under the guidance of experienced chef instructors. While rescued food may be used as part of instruction whenever possible, the training kitchen operates separately from our Hunger Relief kitchen.
This ensures students can focus fully on learning while gaining real-world culinary experience.
Hands-On Culinary Training for Real Careers
Our Culinary Job Training program prepares students for entry-level jobs in restaurants, hotels, hospitals, catering companies, and other food service operations.
During the program, students learn:
- Knife skills and food preparation
- Cooking techniques and recipe conversion
- Food safety and sanitation
- Kitchen organization and teamwork
- Time management and workplace communication
These are the same foundational skills employers expect in professional kitchens.
Students also gain experience working in a fast-paced kitchen environment, helping them build both technical ability and confidence.
Life Skills That Support Long-Term Success
Success in the culinary industry requires more than cooking skills.
That’s why our Culinary Job Training program also includes instruction in essential workplace and life skills, such as:
- Resume writing
- Interview preparation
- Financial literacy
- Professional communication
- Workplace expectations
By combining technical training with career readiness, we help students prepare for long-term success in the workforce.
A Free Training Program That Removes Barriers
One of the most powerful aspects of the program is that it is completely free for students.
Second Helpings provides uniforms, textbooks, transportation assistance, and other resources so participants can focus on learning without worrying about financial barriers. Removing these obstacles helps ensure that people who are motivated to build a better future have the opportunity to do so.
Creating Career Pathways in the Culinary Industry
Graduates of the Culinary Job Training program leave with the skills and experience needed to begin careers in the food service industry. Employers throughout Central Indiana value Second Helpings graduates because they arrive prepared with foundational kitchen knowledge, strong work habits, and the ability to succeed as part of a team. Many graduates secure positions in local restaurants, hospitality operations, healthcare kitchens, and other culinary environments shortly after completing the program. For many students, the program represents more than a new job, it’s the beginning of a new chapter.
More Than 1,000 Graduates and Counting
Since the program began, more than 1,000 adults have graduated from Second Helpings’ Culinary Job Training program. Each graduate represents someone who has gained new skills, new opportunities, and a pathway toward greater stability. When people gain access to career training and stable employment, the positive impact extends beyond the individual to families, workplaces, and the broader community.
Fighting Hunger From All Angles
Second Helpings approaches hunger and poverty with a comprehensive strategy.
Through our Food Rescue program, we collect surplus food that might otherwise go to waste. Through our Hunger Relief program, that food is transformed into nutritious meals delivered to more than 200 partner organizations and programs serving neighbors across Central Indiana.
Our Culinary Job Training program complements this work by helping adults build the skills needed to secure stable employment in the food service industry. Together, these programs create lasting change, reducing food waste, feeding our neighbors, and creating opportunity.
Opening Doors Through Food
At Second Helpings, we believe everyone deserves enough to eat—and the opportunity to build a stable future.
Our Culinary Job Training program helps make that possible. By providing free culinary education and career pathways, we help adults gain the skills they need to succeed while strengthening the workforce across Central Indiana.
And that’s another way we continue fighting hunger from all angles.
