Second Helpings is thrilled to celebrate Jerry and Cindy Baker as our Volunteers of the Month for August 2025! This dynamic duo embodies the teamwork, generosity, and joy that keep our mission rolling forward.

Jerry and Cindy first connected with Second Helpings while searching for a meaningful way to give back in retirement. After exploring several organizations, they found a home here because of how deeply our mission aligned with their values. “We’ve been so impressed with all of the staff and volunteers we’ve met along the way,” they shared. “Everyone is so dedicated—but also just great people to be around.”

Since joining, the Bakers have worn many hats. Jerry is a familiar face on meal deliveries and often lends his skills to general maintenance projects around the facility. His background in race car fabrication has even come in handy—like when he built custom elevated racks for our delivery vans. Cindy often rides along as a companion driver, helps in the kitchen, and both have stepped up to support fundraising events whenever there’s a need. Their willingness to pitch in wherever they’re needed reflects the spirit of true servant-leadership.

When they’re not volunteering, Jerry and Cindy stay active with hobbies and passions that reflect their vibrant energy. Jerry, officially “retired” from his fabrication business, still takes on projects for a select group of customers. Cindy loves playing pickleball, gardening, and enjoying music and art. Together, they never miss a ski season, and both enjoy traveling and biking. Fun fact: Jerry spent 15 years racing cars!

For Jerry and Cindy, volunteering at Second Helpings is about more than the tasks—it’s about the people. “It’s truly remarkable how well thought out the daily processes are,” they explained. “We’re proud to be a small part of making it happen, and we greatly enjoy everyone we volunteer with.”

We are deeply grateful for Jerry and Cindy’s dedication and the joy they bring to Second Helpings. Because of volunteers like them, we are able to fight hunger from all angles—rescuing food, providing meals, and creating opportunities for our neighbors every single day.

Thank you, Jerry and Cindy, for keeping us inspired and reminding us that every contribution, big or small, makes a lasting difference.
