May 2019 Volunteer of the Month: Rick Westwick

Meet Rick! In case you don’t already know, he’s kind of a kitchen king.  In 2017 he decided to join the Second Helpings volunteer family and over 300 hours later, we wouldn’t know what to do without him.

Every Tuesday afternoon you can find him cooking away on one of our tilt skillets. Who knows, you might even catch him twice in one week if he decides to deliver meals or tackle a maintenance project. Oh, and special events? Yeah, he volunteers at those, too.

He discovered Second Helpings by way of two other volunteers, John Toth and Rod Usher, who volunteer together at Habitat for Humanity. They gave him the lowdown on our mission and the next thing we know he’s doing anything and everything he can to help make it a success!

When asked what he enjoys most about volunteering he says, “There are many things that I like about volunteering with Second Helpings but probably the best thing is learning from our outstanding chefs Caroline, Kathy and Jason who all help to improve my cooking skills. I am also proud to be part of this great organization that feeds so many Indianapolis people in need.”

He spent 30 years of his life in sunny California. Since his move to Indy, he has dedicated his time and talents to the Indy Humane Society, Habitat for Humanity, Habitat Global Village El Salvador and Esperanza International in Tijuana, Mexico. He’s also very active with his church, Faith Lutheran Church in Avon, where he works in the garden and has helped build a pole barn. Are you wondering if he ever slows down? Thankfully, he takes plenty of time to hang out with his family and furry friends, ride his Harley and even foster some adorable kittens!

Well, where can we even begin? Rick, we are eternally grateful for your hard work and compassionate spirit. Your dedication towards transforming lives through the power of food is priceless and we are so lucky to have you as part of our volunteer family!
