Food Rescue

How much food did you throw away today?

Americans throw away a lot of food – an average of a pound a day for every man, woman and child in the country. That’s 27% of our available food supply going right into the trash.

Second Helpings rescues as much of that food as we can. In fact, every year we rescue millions of pounds of food. We take resources that nobody wanted and use them to fulfill the most fundamental need that people can’t live without.

We work with our partners in the food service industry—distributors, caterers, restaurants, grocers, and others—to safely and efficiently collect the surplus and perishable food that was headed for the landfill.

Food rescue is accomplished with refrigerated trucks and vans, and drivers who have been trained in food safety and sanitation. Second Helpings drivers will not pick-up food that they deem to be unsafe or inedible.

The food rescue process must also be efficient to meet the needs of those who support us. Most often, the process requires little effort on the part of food donors. Food donations can be arranged on a one-time basis or on an ongoing regular schedule.
