Volunteer Opportunities
Second Helpings relies on more than 600 regular volunteers to fight hunger in our community. Volunteers help prepare and deliver the meals to our recipient agencies and lend their expertise to office operations.

Kitchen Assistant
Volunteer kitchen assistants prepare the thousands of meals we produce daily.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepares food based on instructions of kitchen staff members.
Help with kitchen cleaning, sanitation and maintaining food safety.
May occasionally supervise job trainees or other volunteers in food preparation
Experience Required:
Attend our volunteer orientation.
Be able to lift up to 30 pounds and stand for four hours
Be at least 16 years old.
Available Shifts:
Monday – Friday
8:30 am – 12:30 pm, noon – 4:00
Thursday
4:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Saturday
9:00 am – 1:00 pm
Driver and Driver Companions
Volunteer drivers use Second Helpings’ vehicles to deliver meals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Load outgoing meals and delivers them to recipient agencies.
Monitors the quality of meals being sent out.
Monitors proper safe food handling storage/handling practices at the recipient agencies.
Sanitizes pans & thermal units returned from shelters.
Maintains cleanliness of vehicle.
Experience Required:
Attend our volunteer orientation..
Knowledge of community streets and ability to read maps a plus.
Ability to communicate effectively with donors and recipients
Ability to maintain positive community relationships.
Heavy lifting required.
Drivers must be at least 25 years old and have a valid driver’s license. Driver Companions must be at least 16 years old.
Volunteer drivers must have an acceptable BMV record, driver companions will no be driving.
Available Shifts:
Monday – Saturday: 9:30 am – noon
Monday – Friday: noon – 3:00
The receptionist/office assistant helps out with office functions, including correspondence and accounting.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in office functions based upon direction from the bookkeeper and director of volunteers.
Helping with tasks which may include: answering phones, greeting guests at the front door, data entry, assembling materials, preparing reports and acknowledging donors.
Experience Required
Good oral and written communication skills.
Strong organizational skills.
Ability to type and operate a computer.
Must be at least 16 years old

Job Skills Trainer
The job skill trainer provides training and guidance to students in our culinary job training program.
Duties and Responsibilities
Develop training session(s) to provide fundamental information in areas such as: culinary skills, resume writing, job search skills, interviewing techniques, etc.
Present training sessions either in group settings or on an individual basis, as needed.
Evaluate the effectiveness of programs and make modifications, if indicated.
Gather information about community resources, which may be helpful to job seekers, and disseminate information as appropriate.
Experience Required
Strong communication and presentation skills and experience in Culinary Field or Human Resources needed.
