Not for profits, like Second Helpings, exist to make the community a better place for everyone. But they can't do it alone. Those that can help, should. I believe that helping those that can't help themselves makes the community a better place for everyone. Why Second Helpings? Because they have a clear mission and are good stewards of the time and money donated to their cause.

Donating time, product, and money help move Second Helpings forward in their mission to eliminate hunger and empower people. Eliminating hunger is an obvious need. We all need food to survive and function. Empowering people.....to do what? Why is this important? Second Helpings empowers people to better their own lives, which in turn betters the lives of those around them and betters our community. Helping people help themselves is incredibly important to uplifting and sustaining a healthy, safe and secure community. This is what empowering people is about. Teaching someone a skill, in this case a culinary skill, gives them the ability to provide for themselves and their family.

I teach a class on truffle making to the culinary students at Second Helpings. Teaching these students about truffles is more than just giving them an additional skill to give them an edge in the culinary industry. Although chocolate is a pretty specialized field, a student doesn't have to become a chocolatier to have this skill effect their life. One student sent me a thank you note and let me know that because of the truffle making class, she is starting a new tradition with her family. Her family will gather together to have a truffle making day once a year and she will teach them the pleasure of making chocolate truffles. This is a chance for this student to spend quality time with her family, that will help build the bonds between them. Building better families builds better communities. Knowing that maybe I've made a difference in this one student's family makes the effort worth it for me.

Second Helpings also collects food donations that would otherwise just be thrown in the trash. Waste not, want not. Right? It's such a shame to see food wasted when there are people going hungry. Second Helpings has a program to collect food donations that get made into meals by volunteers at the Second Helpings commercial kitchen. These meals are then sent to feed those that are hungry. Not only is Second Helpings closing the gap on hunger, they are doing it in a socially responsible way. Why do I support Second Helpings? Because I can and it's the right thing to do.

As the Partner of the Month, we are donating 5% of all truffle sales for the month of April to Second Helpings. Stop by and purchase chocolate truffles to help a good cause. Who knew that giving could be so sweet?
