4th Grade Holiday Spirit
The school corporation does a Project Angel food drive. While that’s great and supports some of the needier families of the county and of Avon, I wanted the kids to do something from their own resources.
The students and I have talked about the spirit of this season—generosity to others in need, showing that we care, etc. With that in mind, I purchased some food donations for Second Helpings, a great organization that makes roughly 3,000 meals a day for the needy of our area and a place that I enjoy volunteering in the summers.
We use classroom money (some teachers call it a mini-economy) as rewards for students following directions, using time well, showing responsibility, etc. The kids knew that we’d be having a big “General Store” with lots of edible goodies, Christmas items, stuffed animals, etc. that they could buy for themselves.
When I showed the video from the Second Helpings website and we read the section about foods that were needed by donors, my kids contributed $30 in classroom bucks to buy boxes that I had brought in. Two kids contributed $60 (bought 2 shares of something) and 2 used basically all of the money that they had in their account to do this. That was really special to me that they gave so much it really kept them from buying something at the store (I gave them an item anyway because I was proud of what they have done).

I had the privilege of meeting Tim while he was volunteering at 2nd Helpings over Christmas/winter break and he told me of his class's contribution. Life lessons in the classroom. Thank you Mr. Russell!
