Agency Spotlight: Visions Child Care
Across from the Historic Marcy Village apartments on 46th Street sits a bright colored house with a playground full of fun toys and swings. This is the home of Visions Child Care. This center is run by a young energetic woman by the name of Shannon Sweeting. She has a smile that will light up anyone’s day. One can just tell she loves kids. Shannon grew up in a house full of kids- not siblings, but a house full of neighborhood kids. You see, her mother used to have a daycare in their home. As her mother’s health declined, she decided to step in and take over. They outgrew their home and rented a house nearby until one day, when walking by a house on 46th Street, Shannon thought that would be a perfect location for them, so she stopped in to talk. It was a real estate company that was thinking about selling, and when she walked in it was a done deal. Visions Child Care has been at this location for four years now.
Shannon has eight employees one of whom has been with her since the beginning. The others have been there at least two years, which is rare in the child care business. It is pretty obvious that she has the right combination because when I walked into the room the kids were laughing, playing, smiling and genuinely having a good time.
Most of the families that bring their children to Visions Child Care are low income and with the price of child care it is hard to find a quality, convenient, affordable and a safe place for your children. With the help of Second Helpings, Shannon can stretch her budget and increase her programs. Second Helpings is expanding delivery to five days a week, and this allows all 30 kids to have a hot lunch and dinner.
Shannon may not have children of her own, but she has thirty kids she wouldn’t trade for the world.
