First Free Methodist Church

Founded in 1909, the First Free Methodist Church located at 12th and Tecumseh has become a beloved part of the Near Eastside Community. They are committed to serving Christ and glorifying God by reaching people of all races and economic classes in the neighborhood. This is quite evident every Monday morning when they open their food pantry doors to anyone in need. The Jesus Food Pantry is a ministry which emerged from the annual Thanksgiving Dinner and is led by the lay people of the church. At 10 a.m. registration for the food pantry begins, followed by morning worship at 11:30 a.m. and then at 12 p.m. they distribute food to approximately 1000 people every month. Anyone in need will receive two bags of groceries.

I first became acquainted with this friendly little church when I conducted an annual kitchen inspection. Mary Ann Huter is in charge of their weekly community meal (supplied by Second Helpings) and has been for years. She and her husband pick up the food here at Second Helpings, heat the food, make a few sides, and serve approximately 100 parishioners and neighbors every Wednesday. Mary Ann is one of those extraordinary ordinary people; she has a giving heart accompanied by her friendly smile and warm greeting for anyone she meets. I have seen it when she is serving their community meal as well as when she volunteers in our production kitchen.
